Proposal
I propose to create a device which liberates hearing impaired individuals. Unless a person has a close friend, relative or interest in learning sign language not many people can understand and translate it. This prevents deaf people from connecting with people and limits them to the few individuals who can understand sign language. This often results in a carer or translator to accompany the individual in order for them to carry out everyday tasks which involve communicating with others. In order to overcome this barrier of languages I want to create an application which would translate text into sign language shown by a video for which the user can replicate the movements and communicate with the deaf/hearing impaired individual. However, there are many apps out there that offer this service but as a further application for communication I wish to translate the movements of sign language also into text. With the use of motion sensor software the app will break down the movements and translate using a database of motions. The database will hold most frequent used letters, words, phrases and sentences. There is one app I have found similar to this idea from MotionSavvy developed form Leap Motion technology, this is not an app but a new device, this has not yet been released but can be found at: https://techcrunch.com/2014/06/06/motionsavvy-is-a-tablet-app-that-understands-sign-language/
What I then propose would be instead of a new device an extension of a device which can be attached and removed as and when needed. The motion sensor would be attached on the top of the device and then would be integrated within an app which can be downloaded. To differ slightly from the device named above, I would include information, helplines and classes to teach you sign language as well as being able to translate on the spot to give a more educated understanding of people who suffer with deafness or hearing impairments therefore creating a greater awareness and understanding.
